LiftMaster is the opener we see most often in West Michigan, partly because it is what a great many builders fit as standard. The good news is that its common faults are cheap parts.
Walk a subdivision in Byron Center, Grandville or Cascade put up in the last thirty years and you will find LiftMaster or its Chamberlain sibling on most ceilings. They are the same machine underneath: Chamberlain Group builds both, LiftMaster is the professional-channel brand, and parts cross over almost completely.
That ubiquity is useful. Drive gears, capacitors, logic boards, sensors and trolleys are all readily available for LiftMaster units going back a long way, which means repair stays viable far longer than it does on more obscure brands.
Motor hums, door does not move. The plastic drive gear has stripped. It is designed to be the sacrificial part and it is an inexpensive kit. Ask for the door balance to be checked at the same time, because an out-of-balance door is what strips gears early.
Clicks but will not start. Usually the starting capacitor. Small part, quick job.
Door closes then immediately reverses. Photo eye alignment nine times out of ten, and in a Michigan winter that is often ice or packed snow on the threshold being correctly detected as an obstruction.
Wall button dead, remote works. A break in the low voltage wire, frequently where it is stapled to the jamb.
LiftMaster units have adjustable force limits, and a lot of winter call-outs in this area come down to those settings being marginal for a door that has stiffened up in the cold. The right sequence is to service the door so it moves freely first, then set the force to suit. Turning the force up on a binding door removes the safety margin that stops the door closing on an obstruction.
Almost certainly the plastic drive gear. It is meant to fail before the motor does. Inexpensive part, straightforward job, and worth checking door balance at the same time so the new one does not go the same way.
Effectively yes. Both are Chamberlain Group products and parts are largely interchangeable. LiftMaster is sold through professional installers, Chamberlain through retail.
Usually yes. Parts are widely available and most faults are a single component. We will tell you when a unit has genuinely reached the end rather than selling you a replacement.
