Replacing a door that is past repairing, or upgrading a builder-grade single skin for something insulated? Here is what actually matters in a West Michigan winter, and what is just upsell.
If your garage is attached, and most Grand Rapids houses built since the 1960s have an attached garage, the door is a very large hole in the thermal envelope of your house. A bare single skin steel door has effectively no insulation at all, and on the other side of that garage wall is usually a bedroom, a mudroom or a bonus room over the top.
An insulated door genuinely helps: a warmer garage, a warmer room above it, less condensation, and a door that is quieter and more rigid because the insulation is bonded between two steel skins. That much is real.
What is oversold is the top of the R-value range. The step from an uninsulated door to a mid-range polystyrene or polyurethane door is where nearly all the benefit sits. The step from there to the highest R-value on the brochure costs a lot more and buys much less, particularly if the garage walls themselves are uninsulated, which in older Grand Rapids housing stock they very often are. Insulating the door on an otherwise uninsulated garage is worth doing. Paying a premium for the top of the range on that same garage is not.
A good part of the older housing near the city, in neighbourhoods like Heritage Hill, Eastown, Creston and Alger Heights, has a detached garage off an alley, often with a narrow single width opening and sometimes an original wooden door. Two things matter there.
First, insulation is a much weaker argument on a detached garage that is not heated. Spend the money on a properly weather sealed door instead, because keeping snow and water out matters more than R-value in a building you are not trying to keep warm.
Second, older openings are frequently not square, and they are often not a standard size. A door ordered off a size chart without someone measuring the actual opening is how you end up with a gap at one side. Any quote given without a measurement is a guess.
The old door and track come out and go away with us. New track, new rollers, new springs matched to the weight of the new door, the door itself hung and balanced, the opener reconnected and its travel limits and force reset for a door that now weighs something different, and the bottom seal fitted to the actual slab rather than to an assumption about it.
That last point matters more here than it sounds. A garage slab that has settled or heaved with the frost is rarely dead level, and a threshold seal fitted properly to the slab you actually have is the difference between a door that seals and a door that lets snow drift under it all winter.

Less than you would think. If the garage is attached to the house it is still worth insulating, because it moderates the space next to your living areas. On a detached unheated garage, weather sealing and door quality matter more than R-value.
