Clopay is one of the most widely fitted door brands in the country, and its insulated steel ranges suit a Michigan winter well.
Clopay's insulated ranges use polystyrene or polyurethane bonded between steel skins, which is exactly the construction that makes sense on an attached garage in a cold climate. The insulation is not only about warmth: a bonded sandwich panel is considerably more rigid than a single steel skin, so the door flexes less, runs quieter and holds its shape better over a long life.
Because Clopay is fitted so widely, parts and section matching are generally good. Hardware is conventional, springs are conventional, and there is nothing proprietary that complicates a routine repair.
On a Clopay the mechanical failures are the standard list rather than anything brand specific: springs at end of cycle life, rollers seizing with salt, cables corroding at the bottom bracket, and bottom seals hardening. The insulated construction does not change any of that, and an insulated door still needs the same annual service as a bare one.
One thing worth watching on insulated doors generally is the vinyl or aluminium cladding at the section joints. If a door has been forced while frozen down, damage shows up there first, and a compromised joint lets moisture into the insulation core.
A single damaged section can usually be replaced rather than the whole door, provided the model and colour are still available. That is more often true with Clopay than with smaller brands. Where a finish has weathered for years, a new section will not match perfectly, and we would rather say so up front than have it be a surprise.
